What do ppl mean when they "camp out" for an event?

Like i wanna go to times square for new years eve, but peopla re telling me i should get there days before, to beat the crowds and get up close to the performers. So what do i do? Camp out on the streets of NYC? I DONT GET IT! hah
 
That's exactly what they mean: camp out on the streets. Although normally illegal, the authorities usually overlook it for events such as this. Haven't you ever seen, on the news, pictures of people literally camped out in line to get tickets for big movie or concert? Same thing.
