What do people want?

When you are looking for something to watch, what do want to see in a new cartoon? Action, humor, what? I was trying to figure out just what people want in a cartoon.

~Thanks for your comments in advance!

Hey, what about Romance? :) You know, some people might call me COMPLETELY off my rocker, and I really don't care about that, but what I love most of all in ANY show, whether animated, or live action, I love ROMANCE..........I don't know what else to say, except I LOVE to see people, even CARTOON people, (yes, yes, such as Kim/Ron from Kim Possible, Danny/Sam from Danny Phantom, Manny/Frida from El Tigre..ect, ect....) be in LOVE....Because, baby, when you ain't got romance yourself, you want to WATCH it, or READ about it!! ;) Hope that makes sense.

Comedy, action, fantasy, sitcom, it doesn't matter. I just want the show to not suck.

Although lately I'm getting a bit tired of all the non-stop anime-esque action cartoons coming down the pike, and would like to see good old comedy make a comeback.

Humor like the simpsons because it ends with some issue one ep and starts fresh the next so it doesn't have continuation which I don't like in a toon. :zoidberg:

Funny, I'm the total antithesis of that mentality. Usually, it's a ton of "shippyness" that will drive me away from a TV show. When there's too much kissy stuff on a TV show, I'll be sure to avoid that one like the Plague.

Excepting romance, I'm pretty much easy, although I generally prefer comedy to action.

I'd like well-written humor, non-cheezy drama, good imaginative action scenes, natural/believable/likeable relationships between characters, an absence of stereotypes/cliches...

Yeah, that'll happen.

I don't care if the characters in a show are animal, human, alien or whatever. The characters have to be involving and identifiable. It would help if I cared about them a little. Because I'm not 5 years old, and bright colors and loud noises aren't enough for me anymore.

Right now the only shows that fill the bill for me are Spongebob, Avatar, and sometimes Kim Possible and sometimes Jimmy Neutron. As far as humor and drama are concerned, they're the cream of the crop. All the rest are pretty much mulch.

One thing I'd like see in cartoons is more decent starring roles for girl characters. (And I don't mean more girl-centric shows like Winx Club or Sailor Moon.)

Granted, things are a little better now than they were when I was growing up, but overall, with a few notable exceptions, far too often on animated shows the females are relegated to the minor stereotypical roles like the cliched love interest or the boringly straight and sensible role or the evil, shallow she-beast (usually a big sister or babysitter) who exists only to be a target of ridicule and abuse by boy characters.

Some characters like Babs Bunny, Dot Warner and Slappy Squirrel were a good start, but why stop there? Why can't we have a show like South Park where 1 or 2 of the main kids are girls? Why can't we have an Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy type show in which one of the Ed characters is a girl? Why can't we have a female Bart Simpson or Jim or Tim Possible? Why are the breakout stars of shows like Brian and Stewie Griffin on Family Guy always guys and never girls? Why can't there be a cartoon about a family in which the mother is the zany, funny parent for a change? Shows don't have to be strictly for girls in order to have strong, interesting girl characters in them.

Thanks! I agree with Catlove390, It wasn't a choice because I thought I was the only one out there who watched TV and cartoons solely for humor and romance. I know what you mean, when you don't have anyone, you tend to end up like me.

Silverstar, spyro99, and judyindisguise, I agree with you too.

Overall, I would prefer humor, or possibly action combined with humor. I enjoy comedy, particularly smart comedy, which has to be more than just abstract craziness, although some over-the-top zaniness is enjoyable in small doses.

As far as stars go, they don't have to be 100% squeaky clean law abiding citizens, but that must at least be likable enough that you care about what happens to them. It's hard to want to follow a show where you don't care about any of the characters on it *cough-American Dad-cough*.

Generally, I would prefer to see more shows about humans, mainly because there aren't as many of them. However, I could stand a show about cartoon animals, even anthropomorphic animals, just as long as they aren't anthros acting under the belief that they are human, by that I mean animals who are so humanized that they own pets and go to zoos and have human anatomies. If they're going to be that humanized, then make them 100% human characters. But please, not another show about a crazy animal and the level headed boy that he lives with; there are already too many shows built around that premise.

Also, I'd like to see more shows starring ethnic protagonists. Not a 30 minute preach fest about being accepted and getting along and promoting pro-social values, just more shows about regular people having crazy adventures who just happen to be black, Latino, Asian, etc. I want to see more ethnic superhero/magical beings (And executed better than WB's Static Shock). Where is it written that all main characters/super heroes/magical beings have to be white? And not so many reinforced stereotypes; some Latino characters who don't wear luchador masks and talk like the Frito Bandito. Some more African-American characters who don't play basketball and talk like wanna-be rappers.

Basically, that's what I'd like to see.

Really, All I want is for a show to be good. It can be any genre. I'm not really enamored of superhero cartoons, but I loved Teen Titans. If it's good (and hopefully does something creative with whatever genre they're working with) I'm happy.

Well, Zubby, I completely agree with you, I've been sitting at my tv for the past six hours watching teen titans that I have on DVD because there is nothing else on that I like, and because it pretty much has all the characteristics I like in a show.

And you're welcome cat.

I know exactly what you mean. That's why I've been so ticked off over what happened to Wanda on FOP. She's a reasonably intelligent female plus she's got incredible magical powers, yet she puts up with a callously stupid husband and a spoiled kid. I just don't get what's supposed to be funny about females putting up with bad marital situations. Plus there's something obnoxious about the implication being given out to kids that women are supposed to put up with crap - that's what wives and mothers do. It's a crappy thing to teach kids, especially girl kids, IMO.

I'm the same way. I do like superhero shows if they're well done, and Teen Titans certainly fills the bill in that regard. I can't believe I forgot about it. It has some of the best characters on any toon show, regardless of genre. I hope another Teen Titan movie is in the works; I'd certainly tune in.

You are crazy. Not having any romance is why many people, especially myself, are absolutely sick to their stomach being reminded of it. When I see a couple express affection in public I wish I could spit on them :)

That I can see, kids today have been brought up on so many shows that shove 'shippyness' down their throats, they don't know any other way and assume that everything ought to be that way. Uh-uh.

Romance is nice and all, but, as a wise man once said, let's put things in perspective; there are other things the characters can do.

Me, I fancy humor (character- and situation-based; none of that trendy 'toilet humor'/'character embarrassment' crap), action, continuation (what's the point of bringing something up if it's never referred to again?), personification of animals (maybe, it could be a running gag where the family pet does these amazing things, like preparing its own meals, but the family is pretty nonchalant about it), supernatural wonders and (if we must) villains. Of course, being the film nut that I am, I'd slip in a bunch of movie references/parodies.

Fun thread, BTW.

Wow. I posted this on another website and didn't get any replies for fourteen days. Well, if you exclude me. That was one. But anyway, I like a variety of shows, I mean Teen Titans pretty much covered every genre, but every fan has become a shipper. Then again, I am one so I shouldn't be talking.

I love humor in a show, but not senseless violence, or something happening to a main character that puts them in a life threatening situation, and you are LAUGHING the whole time.

I fully agree. And, another show I like that isn't too much of any one genre is Avatar.
