What do most Muslims think of the famous poet, Omar al Khayyam?

Taken from his Rubaiyyat:

Allah, perchance, the secret word might spell;
If Allah be, He keeps His secret well;
 What He hath hidden, who shall hope to find?
Shall God His secret to a maggot tell?
...
The Koran! well, come put me to the test—
Lovely old book in hideous error drest—
 Believe me, I can quote the Koran too,
The unbeliever knows his Koran best.

Some Muslims call him a true genius, because they believe his poems are expressing protests against "know-it-all" mullahs who preach the wrong message.
Others, majority perhaps, believe that he was outright kaffir in his work.

Just wondering what your opinion is...
Astaghfirallah...what's with all the foul language?
HC - Definitely. Khayyam was a mathmatician, scientist, astrologist, etc before he was a poet. But I suppose that he was so exceptional in all that he does, historians felt to emphasize each of his work--objective and subjective--in their own special way. Anyway, the "question" of his faith remains a huge debate even today. I personally love his poetry and find it quite appealing.
Sweet - My question exactly..but that's just my opinion. Some find the line "lovely old book in hideous error drest--" quite offensive.
HC - Cool, I downloaded it and listening to a little bit of it right now.

Truthseeker - Couldn't agree more.
