What do L & 2 mean on a Toyota Corolla?

In addition to the R, D, & N for driving it has a L & 2. Someone told me it has something to do with slippery conditions but wasn't sure. It is snowing, so if so I would like to know what they mean and how to use them.
 
L is low or first gear in your car transmission. 2 is second gear in your car transmission.
You will need to use these gears if you go up to very steep hill. It will be easier for your car engine when you go up to hill on the second or first depends on the grade of the hill.
You could also use second if you go down the steep hill instead of breaks. This will be harder on your car engine but will reduce downhill speed of your car.
