nice one ask before not after?
first think on your fish type then once you know look up its water requirements temp, quality, flow, tropical, cold, brackish, marine,
this will give you an idea on size of tank this will lead to the size of filter & heater. then decorating your tank does the fish like plants, rocks, caves, sandy bottom or gravel,
where you will position the tank in the room,
let the tank cycle for at LEAST 3 weeks
feeding the fish how often what type of food flake, pellet, live, frozen, wafer.
looking back at this it might seam daunting but when you look up specie requirements you may find more information than could be put down here & learn more about your fish which can only be good for your pocket and the health of your new fish
try wikipedia (aquarium fish)
hope this helps

I am planning on getting a fish and although I know I can get a lot of help from the pet store before I go to buy it I want to have a basic idea of what I'm getting. I need to get a fairly low maintenance fish, which gets along well with other fish of its type because my friend is going to get a fish with me and they will be sharing a tank, also it needs to be a fish that will be fairly comfortable with out a massive tank. Also I need to know what else I need (such as tank, filter etc.)

well... here are the basics:

1) you need a filtered, aerated, heated, sufficient spaced fish tank.
2) do you have the money and time to take care of fish?

3) for a newbie: here are my suggestions. Try tropical fish. Guppies are my favorite.

for a 10 gallon tank ($12)
Flourescent hood ($20)
Filter ($10)
Air pump and air stone ($7)
you need a heater ($10)

Fancy guppies are ($3 each) for males.
for a 10 gallon i'd do 9-10 Fancy Guppy MAX.

tell your friend to not buy just ANY fish. you must researc the fish and see if theyre compatible.

email me and tell me if you need help at: [email protected]

good luck!

(p.s. make sure you never use a fish bowl. lol)

Guppies and goldfish are easy to maintain just don't combine the two and there are many other types these were just at the top of my head. Yeah a tank (with a lid and light) and filter obviously and something for the bottom of the tank like pebbles and some plants ( fake or real), air bubbler, something that stablises the pH levels of the water (ask at the petshop) normal tap water alone will kill them, you'll prob want a net and don't forget fish food :P This is just from memory lol so you should check with the pet store. Can't believe I 4got the heater... lol
