What do I need to buy to boost my laptop's internet signal to pick up further out?

I have internet at my apartments but only at the pool, which isn't that far from my unit. What could I buy to make my laptop extend further out to pick up internet signal?
I purchased a Belkin wireless adapter but that didn't extent any signal.
