What do I do with my herb garden in the winter ?

I live in Richmond, VA and have a plot in my backyard (planted in the ground) that includes basil, thyme, rosemary, mint and oregano. They have all done really well since I planted them in the spring, but now that we're quickly approaching cold weather, I don't know what to do with them. Will any of them live through the winter ? Should I cover them with something ? Or do I just have to let them die ?

You can dig them up and put them in pots and let them grow through the winter indoors. Some of the plants will come back next year if you leave them in the ground, cover them with leaf mulch if you decide to let them be.

Basil is an annual, it is done for the season after flowering.

The others are perennials, will survive the winter and continue growing next season.

Mint is entirely invasive, hope you have it in a pot - it Will take over, hard to get rid of once established.

Cover them if you expect extended frost/freeze.
