I have been dealing with divorce/custody modifications etc. in Iowa for over 3 years, I can not afford a lawer. I have found that there are several of the Iowa Codes starting with 598. that have not been followed. Broken. Etc. I do not know what to do, I am not able to pay for a lawyer etc. Is there anything I can do?
I do not remember the code right off the top of my head, as there are so many but I belive 598.? states that you must be a resident, and he was not a resident at the time of the divorce. The divorce was filed in Feb and we were both living out of the state. He did not move to the state of Iowa til that October and used his parents address stating it was his...

How do you know those codes apply to you and your situation? There are many reasons why a code might not be followed; it might not be applicable, it might be altered by case law, etc. Do not rely on your own analysis to tell you what you want to hear - ie, that the system is hosing you.

You need a lawyer and you know it. If you can't afford one, try finding one pro bono. Most state bars have a list of pro bono matters that they will circulate to their members to see if anyone can help.

There are also Legal Aid offices all over the country that work on a sliding scale based on how much you can pay. If you can't pay anything and they take the case, that means they do it for free.

Finally, check to see if there are any law schools in your area. If there are, find out if they offer a legal clinic to the public. Typically they offer reduced fee services in exchange for you allowing the law students to work on your case.
