What do Faulks' references to birds represent in the book 'Birdsong'?

For example... "There was for once no sound of birds" and "Skylarks wheeled and sand high in the cloudless sky".
The lead character Stephen has an intense fear of birds- can anyone tell me why this is and what they represent to him?
