What do famous authors do to get their novels / books to become noticed?

How do authors such as J. K. Rowling and Stephen King get there novels to become recognised. I would prefer information on how Rowling promoted Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (her first novel) as she was unknown before the publication of this one.
And perhaps the same with Stephen King's Carrie.
I have chosen these particular writers as they are perhaps the most recognised authors of all time and their books will continue to be read and read for perhaps the next century...:D thankyouu

Sometimes it's just luck.

However, a good editor and publisher, as well as media attention can help. If an author's books are made into movies, all of a sudden people might want to read it.

Another thing is the storyline and the writing itself. This isn't always true (cough cough Twilight), but if the writing is spectacular and the storyline original and believable, that can definitely help. This applies to the simplest of plots. If you make them your own and add interesting, original sub-plots and details, it will greatly help.

Hope this helps.

nothing
they just write good stuff in the right time for the right people (people are prepared to read their material)
and by the way there are a lot of famous authors 10 times powerful than king who died very poor not famous at all
but after while they discover them like Edgar Allan poe
it's like in music too
by the way I don't like Rowling and harry potter at all
