My parents and friends were supportive but after I came home on leave after tech school some confessed to me that they didn't think I'd make it through boot camp. I've always had a problem with authority and they didn't think I would adapt. Surprise, surprise 7 years later and I'm staying in till I make E-9 baby. The AF is the best thing I ever did.
I signed up on delayed enlistment before 9-11 and didn't leave for basic until Jan 2002. After 9-11 my mom didn't really want me to go and I'll admit I had some second thoughts too but everything turned out alright.
