what tied them all together and made them
who they were?
not just the people i named
anyone that had a huge impact
on life here on Earth
 
Depends on your definition of "Great"
I guess what tied them together is they followed what they believed in regardless of what they went through, or what others thought of them...
 
President Kennedy? If you look at his record he did nothing to be on this list, he is the most over-hyped president in history. LBJ did all the work, but gave Kennedy the credit. But as to your question, they were able to see a problem and look beyond their own concerns and convince people that change needed to be made, no matter what happened to them personally.

I also think they had such a strong conviction of their their goals that we simply had no way of ignoring them.
 
Having been given an opportunity to be heard by many people, they spoke for individuals' rights to do something they had been denied for decades, and centuries before by morally bad leaders, unrealists--dictators.
