What did my ex want from me or what was is trying to accomplish by reminding me of him?

We dated, broke things off ( i think i hurt his feelings and vice versa) and he texted me a month or so after our break up checking in on me, saying "hi" cuz he felt like it. He got pretty upset when he found out i didn't know it was him cuz i deleted his number ( He deleted me off everything after we broke up). and now two months after that even, is now texting me to invite me to his party.
What's he want and why hasn't he just given up? Guys? opinions are helpful.
