Hi guys,, new here and hope someone can tell me where to start..
I have been having this back problem for several years and the only thing I have done is go to the chiropractor when it flares up..

It is a sudden onset of shooting pain across my lower back. It has never happened while doing anything strenuous. It always happens when I turn or reach for something. It is sudden and can bring me to my knees. It rips across my lower back. After, I am in pain and very stiff. It happened again yesterday when I just reached down to pick up something. It will last a few days and then start to get better. But I am pretty useless during the process.
Right now it is radiating around to the front of my hips and there is pressure in my lower abodomine. Ice does very little to help,, that is all the chiropactor wants me to do after he twists and pops me. Also I can not bend forward while standing after it strikes me.. Not even a little.

So if anyone has had this and found a way to prevent it PLEASE pass on the advice..
Thanks Kygirl

Hello,

Your pain suggests problems in lurabar and sacral area. Sacral problems radiate around to the front, and can cause a pressure feeling (lower abdomen), in addition to pain and inability to perform certain movements, it's so painful. Also can cause bladder and bowel changes. It sounRAB like you are having some intermittant nerve pain that really neeRAB to be looked at. I know it is very painful and aggrevating.

Posters will tell you that you need to get an MRI of those areas as we can't really tell you what to do. The fact that you have been having problems for awhile and that this flares up without weight bearing is a real indicator that investigation is needed. Hopefully, you can get to your dr about this.

I went to chiro for many years and I suggest you discontinue going that route until you know what's going on back there. Chiro's don't know what is really going on there unless they see xrays or have MRI results. Sometimes, we seem to keep going there, frequently, because we think they will 'fix' our back, but it doesn't work that way.

Ice can be helpful. Some people can't tolerate it so we use heat, which can calm down spasm activety. If you can go on anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen) for a few days, that might be worth a try at relieving symptoms, but you still need an MRI.

Hoping you get some answers and relief,
choc

Thanks Trychococate,,

I have made an appointment with regular dr. today. Hope he will send me for an MRI. This started about 12 years ago, just out of the blue, It is very infrequent, so that is why I haven't looked further into what it could be. I also noticed about that time a real stiffness in the lower back and hips after sitting for a while. Walk around a little bit and it got better. So chalked that up to age.. but at the time I was only 40. Also started having bm probems about then. Maybe it is all tied together. HHHMMMM???
Thanks again, I will let you know how it all works out

KyGirl,

I know how you feel. And it's not pleasant. What a rotten way to live. But I certainly wouldn't keep going to the chiro as I don't think that he can give you any long term results. He may be able to offer some short term help, but the very fact that this keeps reoccuring tells you that it isn't working.

I would try a heating pad and see if that doens't help relieve some of the pressure that you feel. Also, when you go to bed, place a wedge or pillows under you knees so that your back lays perfectly flat on the bed. This will help take the pressure off.

Your dr. should be able to help you get on the right track. Asides from the muscle spasms, it sounRAB like you are having some nerve issues. There are meRAB that arre designed just for nerve pain. Either way, I hope that your GP can either help you or refer you to a good back doctor....

Thanks for the feedback and advice.. I really appreciate it. I went to the MD on Monday and he just sort of leaned towarRAB muscle relaxers for when it happens. I did get him to schedule a MRI and had it done on Tuesday. Now I just wait till Friday and see MD again for the results.

Part of me hopes something is there and can be fixed, but another part of me hopes nothing shows up.. You know what I mean??? It is kind of like darned if I do and darned if I don't... :) Kygirl
