What could possibly cause two of my six cylinders to stop firing on my 1988

toyota 4runner? My wife brought the truck in to the shop and they explained the problem but her recollection was not crystal clear so I called the shop myself. Unfortunately the main mechanic spoke broken English and I had a hard time understanding the situation completely. Also the two mechanics told me two slightly different versions. It first seemed that two of the six cylinders had lower compression than the other four but he said it wasn't horrible. But the other mechanic told me later that actually two of the cylinders were not even firing and suggested looking into a rebuilt or new motor replacement. I'm guessing that until the engine is cracked open a person does not know the exact problem but could it be that the head gasket is bad? Or is it more likely that it is something more serious? The truck has been running hot lately and has overheated a few times, which it had never done in the summer. They checked the plugs, air hoses, and IAC valve. 1988 4Runner, 184,000 miles. Idles rough, stalls when foot not on pedal, gas fume exhaust smell. Had a tune up back in April. Should I take it somewhere else for a second opinion?

1 get leak down test
2 get compression test
3 overheated a "few" times...how bad...aluminum heads warp easy,,really may be blown gasget..
find a mechanic you can talk to..one who writed down the results of tests...2nd opinion sounds like a good idea
