I have an 08 Ford Fusion. I keep hearing this whirring noise when I accelerate and decelerate usually during around town driving. It sounds like a faint fire engine siren. It does not do it however when I am driving on the highway at a steady speed or when using cruise control. I have ask the mechanic about it and of course they said it was normal engine noise. I am not sure but it definitely appears to be coming from the engine. Does anyone know what this noise might be. Other than this the car drives very smooth and with little road noise. It's a 4 cylinder Duratec engine and it's kind of loud at idle and otherwise, but I can get over that. HELP!!

The noise you hear is nothing to worry about. This is a combination of the air intake system and the fuel injection system working together. Very unique characteristic of the ford 4-cylinders. My wife drives a 2006 Focus with the 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine and it has the same occurance. That engine is a very good package for that fusion, you have nothing to worry about! The reason it is loud at idle speed, is because the cooling fans come on at idle and creates the extra noise. My wife's focus has 68,000 miles now, with no engine problems at all. But the only thing I suggest, is using a synthetic blend motor oil when you change the oil on your car. Gives the hard working 4-cyl a little extra protection! Hope this helps!
