What could be wrong with my 1986 Jeep Cherokee?

As a back story, my dad recently bought this for me as my first car. It's a junkpile that he originally bought to haul off as scrap metal and make some money off it. But I took it. Now he won't help much, and most of the progress was accomplished by me and my extremely limited knowledge of cars.

It has the 2.8 V6. It (and all the gas in it) has sat since 2003. There was a sort of problem then, but nobody can reach a consensus as to what it exactly was... So I poured some (fresh) gas into the carb, jammed a pair of pliers on the throttle to hold it open, and hotwired it (the key was lost before we got it, apparently). It would crank for a few seconds, then spit and sputter and *almost* start, and then just crank again. It did this several times and then just went clink! and wouldn't move. Me and my neighbor kept trying, but the motor wouldn't move. Then I accidentally bumped it as we were disconecting the jumper cables and it moved, but we didn't try again after that. What do you think is wrong?
