What could be up with my betta fish?

I believe my poor betta fish is sick. He hasn't been eating much and he's been very still. This afternoon he was just laying in the gravel in his tank. He lives with a buddy so i took him out of the tank and he's just in a bowl now. He eats very slowly and rarely. He is pale. He has no obvious rot.

i thought he wasnt eating because he was on the side of the tank with the filter and i wasnt sure if it was because he wasn't strong enough to make it to the top of the water to eat.

any ideas what i can be doing for my fish friend and any ideas to what may be wrong?
