What could be the problem in my 03 chevy Malibu?

I was driving home and the car lost power like I ran out of gas. I tried to start it but it wouldn't crank over. Now sitting in my driveway the battery drains out and the car still won't start. I heard about the theft light but mine is not on. Any suggestions?
