The past few weeks, my 2001 Ford Taurus has been idling rough. It doesn't matter if it's in park, or if I'm just stopped at a light. It seems to be worse when it's hotter outside. It's usually fine while the car is actually moving, although occasionally I feel a little jerk while going down the highway. Also, it seems to be a little harder to accelerate than it used to be, but I could just be imagining that. The check engine light is on, although it's been on since I bought it back in 2006. I've had the codes checked. I don't remember everything, but I do know that it has a cylinder misfire, among other problems. I know that the spark plugs and wires need to be replaced badly, since that has never been done (except for one spark plug that has been changed). This COULD be the cause of the problem. I also did have a major leak in a vacuum hose, but that has been recently replaced. And we did reset the computer after replacing the vacuum hose, and it is still idling rough. But, it does not idle quite as rough as it did before I had it fixed. In the past, I've also had the EGR sensor replaced, and the MAF sensor cleaned. And it has a brand new battery. What are the most common causes of the problems my car is having, if it turns out to not be the spark plugs or wires? I've heard it could be several things. MAF sensor, O2 sensor, fuel injector, spark plugs, wires, etc.
I've also had an oil change brand new gas filter and air filter put on the car less than a month ago, and that did not help.
To answer you, the_boy_toy, my cousin, (who is a master mechanic) has looked at the car several times. I would assume he would think to look at the transmission fluid levels. Also, I just had the oil changed recently, and they SAY they check all the fluid levels. But I don't know for sure. I keep an eye on the temperature gauge, and it's not overheating.
