On the Common App, it asks if you're proficient in any other language besides English, and I was wondering how seriously colleges take this question, or do they even care? I've taken 4 years of Spanish, can read it well enough to get by, can speak in basic sentences, and understand some of what I hear in movies, but I wouldn't be able to fully converse with someone in spanish for more than a minute or anything. Should I still say that I'm "proficient" (no other options) in Spanish, or should I ignore the question altogether? They're not going to ask for some confirmation, right?
And I'm not trying to lie my way through the application; I just want to know if it's worth it to say that I'm proficient in a language I pretty much understand, or if it really doesn't matter.
