...convey moral dilemmas? There is a series of books I recall from my childhood in which the author uses one or two animal characters per book to discuss good ways to treat others. One of the books featured an overweight cat who dealt with ridicule from other cats. In another a community of animals decides it's a good idea to build fences until the whole hillside is fenced in and no one can communicate with each other. These books were all the same size (maybe 10 inches tall and taller than they were wide) and had detailed illustrations.

I believe you are talking about the Stephen Cosgrove books. "Catundra" & "Mumkin" sound like the two you are describing. I have great childhood memories of his books.
