What cheap to run used cars (7- 12 yrs old) can you recommend? Reliability and cheap

repairs r important? I can only spend around £600-£800 (I know, not much, but all we can afford).
I commute 40 miles a day and am considering Escorts, Mondeos, Vectras, Astras. Any knowledge of others please?

Your view on deisal vs petrol with regard to higher purchase and maintenance costs vs higher mpg.

best overall low cost car on market will be ford KA. cheap to run,cheap to insure ,overall good quality and repairs not too expensive. an underestimate d vehicle. compares very well a Volkswagen beetle or Golf. ( cheaper than both overall running costs etc)
 
Ford Fiesta by a long way, this shape is great value

I've had a HYUNDAI Accent, for 4 years, not a thing wrong, MOT? sails through, 35 mpg, will exceed the top speed limit ( cough, cough ), well gets there quick,
its a 1998 model, interested? NO, not mine have a look...

To be honest mate id look for anything to do with ford parts are cheap easy to get hold of a lot of work on a ford is easly done buy yaself so id definatly go for a ford if i was you you can proberly pick up a half decent one these days for a pony so its all good good luck to ya
 
Have reluctantly just sold me wife's Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 ....that was a cheap, reliable car
