What car should I get?

I don't know if I should get a car payment, or just buy a decent car with cash. I will be moving soon, and hope to get a job when I get there. I have been looking at a few cars within my budget. I was going to stick with a foreign car, like a Honda Civic, Mazda RX8/ Sedan, Nissan Sentra, etc. Now I am thinking I could also get a Chevy Cobalt(SS), or a Ford Mustang(GT). Everyone in my family always gets an Asian or European import though, so I have no knowledge of the reliability of an American car. I want a car that is reliable, stick shift, and preferably a coupe and fast. I like the Mustang GT's, but I don't want to have a $200 car payment for a car that will break down in a month. So basically, should I get a car payment or a decent car with cash; and are American cars reliable, specifically the ~2004 Cobalt SS and Mustang GT?
Thanks for the answers so far guys! I think I really want a Mustang GT, but I know I shouldn't get one. One of those types of things. I have been looking at 0-60 times, and the Mustang GT was at like 6 seconds. I was like "Damn, I need one of those!" I guess I'll stick with the Honda Civic. I saw the Nissan Sentras and they look pretty cool too. I like the SE-R and the Spec-V versions. I'm currently driving a 2002 Mazda. I love it, but it's getting older, and I want a stick shift anyway. I'm going to stick with either the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, or a Mazda of some sort. I'll just get a cold air intake, headers, and a cat back exhaust with a Greddy Muffler when I have the cash.

Thanks for the help guys!
