...Toyota 4 runner? have a 1997 4 runner...... grinding noise in rear wheel. told it was a possible problem with the bearings being worn. said it was dangerous. said it could possibly be the inner or outer bearings but if inner, am I looking at a $400 bill here ? Anyone know of these things ? by the way, my mechanic is actually honest, so I know , or FEEL like the number he gives me will be fair, but I just have no idea what to expect. anyone ???

generally it is cheaper to get a whole rear end used from the salvage yard than to repair yours. This is because it might also have other related problems and the parts and labor are too expensive. I and others have done it a million times. When you get a used rear end , what you get is everything on the rear end except the tires, the brakes and everything. Call some junk yards to see how much. The last time i did it on my blazer ,The junk yard charged me $150 for the rearend and they installed it for $100 .A typical mechanic will charge much moe to install it.. Then you just remove the old broken rear end and bolt in the used replacement. which is a simple job. ,,hope that helps. PS call alll the junk yards in your town, they all will have diff prices.
