What can I safely delete? (6682)

I've been busily customizing my Nokia 6682 and noticed that I'm running low on the internal memory despite the fact that I've been installing most everything onto the MMC. So, I thought I'd open up FExplorer and thin things out a bit but I realized as I looked at all of the not-at-all-intuitive filenames that I haven't got the foggiest notion of where to begin!

Is there a system that would help me determine which files I can safely delete?

Okay, for example - I installed OggPlay, right? Now when I open up App. Manager and run down the list I see an entry for OggPlayMMF.sis (307kB). Can I safely delete that since the app is already installed?

Also, in App. Manager I usually see multiple entries for each application. I'm not sure what that means and whether or not I can options>remove some of these without rendering the application unusable.

And one more App. Manager question: each application on the list has a blue or red square icon in front of it. This icon definitely doesn't seem to be tied to whether or not an app is listed (in the 'View Details' option) as installed. The pattern seems to be blue=memory card and red=phone memory.....is that right?

Man, oh man. I need an User's Manual for the App. Manager!

Here, I'll give you a quick summary, but you could learn all this by just reading the manual for the phone. You can download it online at nokia.com/nokiausa.com if you don't have it.

App. Manager is kind of like Add/Remove Programs in Windows. It shows you what is installed and allows you to uninstall these programs. If you want to keep and use the program, DO NOT delete it from here, because you will be uninstalling it. I'm not sure why you're seeing multiple entries for a apps in App. Mngr.; unless you installed more than one version, but even then, the most recently installed version usually overwrites the previously installed ones. Some applications do have multiple parts and show up as more than one entry in App. Mngr. (like a dictionary program could be one part for the dictionary viewer and one part for the actual dictionary database file).

The Blue vs. Red sq. in app mngr, if I'm not mistaken, simply differentiates between sis progs and java progs. Don't worry about that. I think there is also something about the fact that if the program isn't fully installed, then the squares are not filled in, but I don't remember of the top of my head.

Now the memory that you're running out of on the 6682 is not your C: or E: disk space, but actual RAM. The 6682, has about 8mb of useable ram when you boot up and is known for having pretty poor ram handling abilities. I've never actually owned one for that reason, but do some searches on here and you'll see what I'm talking about. There isn't a heck of a lot you can do about this, short of getting a different model (and honestly, most of the phones since 6620 have had RAM issues), the N70 is the king of having an overabundance of ram, and the more recent E and N series devices seem to have about 18-20MB of free ram on boot, which is not fantastic, but much better.

I suggest you continue installing everything on the mem card. I don't find that anything is run any slower as a result. Whatever you do, definitely, don't run your C: drive down to just a few free MB, that can/may only worsen your RAM issues.

Hope this helps.

He didn't specify that he was running out of RAM. He did say internal memory, so I think that's the case.

It sounds like your phone may be hanging on to the .sis installer files that are kept on the phone when you install applications with PC Suite. It's okay to delete those files. That's like deleting the .exe file after you've already installed that program on your PC.

Thanks for that in-depth explanation. I'm at work right now and so don't have my phone's manual with me and, in any event, I didn't recall such detail when I looked through it last.

The memory problems I'm concerned about occur when...well, for example - this morning I tried to open a PDF file. There were no other applications running but the Acrobat viewer reported midway through opening the file that memory was low and that it was going to return to the document listing. So that kind of thing. (I've also had games crap out complaining of too little memory but I'm not as concerned about those.)

In FExplorer, I can see that C: is at 1688/9184 KB. D: is at 1873/1883 KB and I've got tons of room on my mmc. I'm not sure why C: has so little room left as I pretty much install everything onto the mmc but there it is.

Anyway, so that's where I'm trying to clear up space.

Look in your Nokia folder on C:. I think that's what it's called on 6682, the one with Pictures, Videos, Sounds, etc. folders, and make sure nothing is in there. There is also an Install folder somewhere on C:, cant recall where, if you have anything in there, then those are the .exe installer files and as long as you installed the program, feel free to delete the contents of that folder. p,s. same folder sits on E: too, same advice above applies.

I have a quick related Question here: I have acrobat viewer, and even though i've deleted the pdf files I had on the phone, whenever i boot up the reader it gives a recently viewed documents list with all those old files. is there someplace I can go with fExplorer to delete the recent opened list?

thanks.

This sounds like a memory problem rather than a free space issue. What you need to do is try holding your menu button down for about 2-3 seconds. That will pop-up a list of programs you currently have running. Select each one and close it. That should free up some memory.

Edit: Wait. You did say you didn't have any programs running. Hmmm... Try it anyway. Maybe it'll help. If not...
