can't be fixed.? I have kids learning to drive and they are nervous w/out the dashboard lights. I don't even like driving w/out the dashboard lights. Majority of driving is at night. Mechanic says he looked at it hours and hours and said something about composit? I tap on it and it goes off then on.

Not knowing the kind of van you have, it's a little hard to pin down. However, most have a printed circuit that the lights are connected to. There is also a plug on the back of the unit that can be giving an incomplete connection.
Take it to a shop that has a lot of experience in electrical work. Most are going that direction now since most of the engine controls are electrical. Dash lights should be a piece of cake.
You said that if you hit the dash, they flash so that eliminates the switch.

HI
try another shop... it sounds like a lose connection.. or bad ground. again find another shop that knows what they are doing.. I hope he didn't charge you for hours and hours of nothing...
good luck

Anything can be fixed. It's a cost issue . It could be something
simple or complex.

But for now, why not just invest in an auxillary light that you
can place against the dash that will illuminate it at night with
the flick of a switch. You can also have it wired so it goes on
with the headlights.

Battery operated or 12volt hookup ... they have them in stores
or on the internet.

Hope this helps.... it could wind up saving you $$$$$

By the way, is this a GM car...80's or 90's ?

Do tell....
