A lot more than I can write in the allowed space. Though it has a basic language in common with British poetry, American poetry has a spirit and a flavor entirely its own. Read Alan Shucard's book on American poetry, it covers the Puritans through to Walt Whitman. For more recent poetry, look at Cary Nelson's excellent anthology. This is just barely scratching the surface.
