Actually the best camera for starting out in photography is a 35 mm SLR with standard zoom lens and a couple of classes in photography.

This will assure that your learn how to precisely expose all your images and understand the fundamentals of using a camera.

After you have honed your skills using film, you can buy a DSLR that uses the lenses you already have from your photo class experience. Usually Nikon or Canon systems are the best to start using because you never know if you will later pursue a career as a pro and Nikon and Canon supply all the cameras and lenses to the pros unless they shoot medium format, then Mamiya and Hasselblad rule
