What branch of military would be best for our family?

My husband is a Germany citizen (We have applied for a green card already) He is 31 and we have 2 children and one more on the way. He would love to join the US military. He served his mandatory 10 months (I think) when he was 18 or 19 in the Germany military. He has a degree in mechanical and electrical technician work.

I am really concerned about him going off to war and something happening to him. But he is determined to join.

What branch would be best for him to join?
Our oldest child is his "step child"

With his technical education the Air Force would offer the most opportunities, especially since he'll have to enlist at first. After he gets his citizenship he can apply for a commission.

First, your family is too large for him to enlist. Right now a waiver is needed for any recruit who has more than 2 dependents.... he has 3 with number 4 on the way. A waiver might be impossible to get.

Second, he'll need a 10 year, permanent green card to enlist. If your marriage is less than 2 years old he's going to get a 2 year, conditional green card. He cannot enlist with that.

it depends on what he wants to do. given his background, I'd recommend the Navy or the Air Force. but if he's familiar w/ the Army then he may prefer that.

I would advise him to go Air force or Navy with his degree he could get in as an officer or an E-4 enlisted. The only things would be waiting list for those branches. It can take a while to get into the Air force or Navy. However, the Navy and Air force each have the shortest deployments out of the 4 branches.

First of all... there are no "Germany" citizen but German citizen. Second, you need to have the green card in your hands before you can enlist or any other form of legal migratory status such as political refugee (who has been given a social security number, alien registration number and work permit) student visas or work visas do not apply. Second, what kind of degree does he have? did he go to a technical school or university? if so, then he can join any branch of the military as an enlisted serviceman starting out as an E-4 >> meaning that he will be a corporal and earn about $1825 per month plus Basic Housing Allowance witch depends on your zipcode and BAS (food allowance) which is $330 and separation pay ($250) for Basic and Job school given that school does not last more than 20 weeks. I would recommend Army because promotions come quicker since it is a larger force and to do something related to administrative stuff. If he gets his citizenship before his 35th birthday, he could apply to become a commissioned officer and start out as a second lieutenant granted he can get a security clearance.

Talk to your recruiter and he can clarify you most of this information. Good luck
