What books have effective story openings?

For a speaking project I have to pick a book I think has a good opening and then explain why I think it is effective. I then have to write a piece imitating that authors style and comment about it.

Can any one think of a book with a good opening and explain why it is effective? My head has gone blank of books with good openings.
