What books are must-reads in order to prepare for my first backpacking trip...

...through the Hawaiian Islands? I've found books on backpacking the islands... what I'm inquiring about here are more historical and cultural works, fiction and non-. For example, I read Moloka'i, by Alan Brennert, last year and loved it... something like that, or not... I'm hoping for a deeply intimate encounter with this place, so I'd rather not disembark the plane wholly ignorant of its history or its people...
