jrr tolkein, the hobbit. SO good. i read it when i was going into 8th grade. its an adventure story and well, if i like a book then its good because i dont read that much and i dont like very academic/hard to understand books. haha. good luck!

Based on the information you provide, I'd say Nick Hornby. Try About a Boy or High Fidelity, both are (relatively) short. They're both set in London in the late 1990's. About a Boy is about a "cool" 20-something guy befriending a "loser" 13 year old kid, and High Fidelity is about a (different) 20-something guy who works in a record shop and is obsessed with music. Both novels are very funny, and very easy to read.

Alice Sebold - Lucky. This contains an account of her real life experience of getting raped, early on in the book. It is 272 pages, but you can bluff about having read the rest of it. Just remember a couple of the reviews off Amazon or something.

I wouldn't read anything from the rest of them. They are all the sort of stuff you see on the bookshelves of the charity shops near train stations.

I would personally go for the Orson Scott Card series Tales of Alvin Maker. A very good series of books.

Seventh Son (1987)
Red Prophet (1988)
Prentice Alvin (1989)
Alvin Journeyman (1995)
Heartfire (1998)
The Crystal City (2003)
Master Alvin (forthcoming)

If you can get them, read them.

read horror thriller suspense novels they are way cool, J.R.R Tolkein is a good Arthur, so is Nick Hornby, Lorene Cary and Ann Patchett i have not read any novels from the others so i am not sure
