What book or movie is this?

OKay so like nine years or so ago I remember watching this movie with my dad, I think it was an 80s or 90s movie. In the movie there was a guy that goes to college and I think he's like a robot or something cuz I remember he has like on his arm this metal thing that opens up and its like a keypad or a calculator or something. At the college he meets a girl who I think in the end also ends up being this robot. The only two scenes I really remember are the guy running into the girl in the stairwell and the two of them in a desert area or something like that. What is this movie? When I went to Tutor Time around this time I saw the movie, I remember seeing a book that had a cover that had a boy with a thing on his arm like I described above, with a girl on the cover too. I think this may have been the book the movie was adapted from, but I'm not too sure. Any suggestions as to what this book or movie might be would be helpful!! Thank You!!!
