I've always assumed it was alveoli, but now that I look at it again, that doesn't seem quite right.
I found the answer by looking up the photo ID from the copyright page!

As blood passes through the glomerulus, water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the capillary walls by the surrounding podocytes."
