What bike should I get?

OK, I will have about 500 bucks in a couple of months, and I want to get a new bike. We have a cabin, and I am going to bring my current Trek 820 up there and leave it there, and I want to get a new bike for commuting and doing some trails. So, I want a mountain bike, under 500 bucks, with disc breaks if possible. Any suggestions?
Also, as a recommendation, what type of pedals should I get? I will be doing some small jumps with easy-moderate trails.
 
Are you happy with your Trek (for what was paid)? I'm a big trek fan myself and so would recommend an upgrade to the 3900 Disc, but honestly all the big brands are equal and it's all about personal preference, so go to your local bike shop and check it out - most of the brands have respectable entry level models for this price.

The pedals are personal preference too. I actually went with a set of BMX platforms (because I like them) for my Trek 6700. I do moderate to advanced trails and some downhill, as well as light trail and paved path riding.
