What backpack should I buy?

I'm looking at going backpacking around France later this year. I'm in the market for a good, sturdy backpack that will suit me. Light weight, etc. Ideally I'd like one that is big so I can carry everything I need, but has a smaller detachable one for day trips.

Any ideas? gimme names/models or url's :)
