Darrel is David's boyfriend. David and Darrel are 16, and they killed two little boys. David is in the hospital after being attacked. Darrel's mom, Elizabeth, is there after slipping and hurting her head. The news has reported that biopsies of the two boys David and Darrel killed are undergoing that night, and prints in the boys would point to the killers by morning. Darrel has been thinking of what to do. This is the scene where he visits his mom for the last time. Thoughts?
“Darrel?” Elizabeth asked when Darrel walked into her hospital room. Elizabeth turned the sound off on her television. David looked over at it. In the morning his and David’s faces would be on that screen with the words ‘WANTED: Dead or Alive’ running underneath them.
“Hi, mom” Darrel said nervously. He held a package of peanut butter cookies in his hands with tears behind his eyes.
“What are you doing here? Is Daniel with you?” Elizabeth asked, sitting up in her bed.
“No, dad’s not here. My friend David got beaten up at school” Darrel explained. “I’ve been here a couple of hours, but I fell asleep in his room before I could come see you”.
“Oh no” Elizabeth said. “Is he going to be okay?” she asked.
“Oh yeah, he’s totally fine” Darrel said. “Cookie?” he offered.
“No thanks” Elizabeth said, extending her arm out for Darrel to sit with her.
Darrel ran up to his mother’s side and hugged her. He sat down next to her with his head on her shoulder.
“Oh, you grow so quickly” she said, running her fingers through his hair. “I remember when you were such a little baby” Elizabeth said in a far-off voice with a dreamy expression. “I remember when I could hold in you my hands and throw you in the air” she recounted “your father always wanted to do it too, but the one time he tried he couldn’t catch you, haha… but he was standing over the bed so you just fell on the bed and bounced around for a few seconds until I scooped you up” she smiled.
“You never told me that” Darrel said. He laid his hand on Elizabeth’s stomach.
“Hm, wonder why not” Elizabeth said. “The only one your dad was ever able to play much with was… Kirk” she choked out the name. “Ah, I miss my little Kirk” she said, laying her head on Darrel’s head.
“I know you do, Mom. I miss him too” Darrel said.
“And in a couple of years” Elizabeth said, wrapping her arms around Darrel. “You’re going to be far away in college” she said.
“Well…” Darrel began to speak.
“And that’s not an option, sweetie, you’re going to college” she said. “I only have one son left you’re not going to mess up in life” she said. “I want you to go where you can do your best… I want you far away from this little town, because there’s nothing here that will let you reach your full potential” she told him.
“Far way from here?” Darrel asked, his mind drinking in those words.
“Yeah” Elizabeth said, falling asleep on Darrel’s head.
“I love you, mom” Darrel said, wrapping his arms around her. She replied with a small purr in her sleep. “But I don’t want to hurt you by making you watch me get locked up… I think you wouldn’t mind it if I lived on” he said quietly. He slowly stood up from his bed, took the remote control for Elizabeth’s television, and clicked onto the news. Elizabeth would have the pleasure of waking up to the morning news’ Man Hunt report… make that Teen Hunt. Darrel walked out of the room and quietly shut the door.
