What are your favourite 80s Movies and Why?

It doesn't have to be a critique though does it? The title of the thread is quite simple 'What Are Your Favourite 80's Movies and Why?', the OP's hardly requesting a dissertation in cinematography, just asking why you happen to like a film thats all, a bit of light banter. If you can't be bothered to join in the fun why bother posting at all?

Two I forgot. I can almost recite the lines in Wierd Science along with the film, I watched it that often, and Mad Max 2 is simply one of the best action films ever made, and has a nice level of depth suggested by little touches (such as each body Max searches having some soveneir of the old world).

Now I see,

I wasn't have a pop at you Varla, please don't take it personal. It's just a bit of fun, just nice to know what people like and why, never know we might have something in common.

Sorry if I came across a bit mean. :)

There was a He Man movie in development for ages and a draft of the script was even leaked online. It was to be much more in line with the movies 'Transformers' and '300' than the 1987 MOTU movie.

I read last year that it had been scrapped (this was Variety or one of the other film publications).

Return of the Jedi - Had Ewoks instead of Jar Jar

Stand By Me - Great coming of age drama

Innerspace - Great cast & great storyline

The Goonies - First you gotta do the truffle shuffle :D

The Lost Boys - First Vampire Film I ever Saw

Bill & TeRAB Excellent Adventure - Need I say more

Spaceballs - Pizza The Hut

Gremlins - Phoebe Gates :D

Robocop - Need I say more

Ferris's day off - You pinhead

Jumping Jack Flash - Whoopie Goldberg was awesome in this movie

Top Secret - Great spoof

The Zuckerman collection Airplane / Top Secret / Naked Gun

There are loaRAB more that I could mention but am gonna finish with a cult classic.........

Beetle Juice - It's showtime and......... "Day-o" :D

That is a wonderful film. Based on Mel Brooks' early career as a writer for Sid Caesar.

Interesting to see some films which were highly acclaimed at the time failing to appear in this thread. eg the Coen Brothers' early work. I found Raising Arizona a bit annoying at the time but I would definitely include their first film...

Blood Simple

Lots of them, but off the top of my head.... (from my DVD collection)

The Breakfast Club - Just a great, re-watchable movie, I love it!
Beetlejuice - Funny, cool, that dance around the dinner table...
RoboCop - Brilliant sci-fi, action, wit, send-up... just an amazing film overall
Short Circuit - Loved it since I was a child, and still do!
Short Circuit 2 - See above!
Back To The Future - Who doesn't love this film?
Ghostbusters - If you don't like this film, seek professional help. But who'ya gonna call?
Trading Places - Brilliantly funny, one of the funniest comedies ever.
Beverly Hills Cop - Eddie / Axel - pure funny from start to finish.
Aliens - Best action movie ever? Great script, acting, action, characters... I could go on.
Die Hard - Often imitated, never bettered, the ultimate action flick and one of the best movies of the 80's.

Paddy :D

My all time favourite 80's film would have to be 'Night of the Comet', it's pure 80's naffness. I also think 'Working Girl' is a very 80's movie, which I love.

I'll give you the Smiths, New Order, the Specials, Kraftwerk and stuff like that, but the 80s was when "popular" music started to decline rapidly and Top of the Pops began to focus on teenie stuff like Bros and Wham instead.

Anyway, back to movies... has no-one mentioned Krull yet?! For shame.

Was Bennet (the villain) supposed to be gay? He had that village people type moustache going on, and that spangly vest.

He was also played by the actor who played Wes, the mohawk sporting henchman of The Humungous, in Mad Max 2, who was definitely gay. :D

lol, I was just thinking about Remo Williams the other day. I was actually wondering if it was a real movie or if it was a dream I had when I was a kid.

PS: Did the actor who played the lead role not also star in another 80's "classic" where he's a motorbike rider who travels back in time to the wild west and becomes his own great granfather or somtheing like that?

hmmm loaRAB of my faves already mentioned but I'd add these:

Footloose - Kevin Bacon is SO cute in this

FAME (1980 so just inside) - FAB film

Flashdance - Fantastic dancing by a welder

Who Dares Wins - OK so I had a crush on Lewis Collins at the time, the film was still good.

Risky Business - awesome soundtrack

Cocktail - Tom Cruise when he was pretty cute

Taps - Early Tom Cruise and Sean Penn

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Glory
Lost Boys

First two were amazing Matthew Broderick films and the last one was just so creepy for me the first time I watched it. Instantly loved all three.

Back the the Future definitely. Although looking at it now most of the future world ideas that were portrayed in the second film were a bit off. Flying cars in 2015..shame it looks highly unlikely, and I did want a hoverboard so much.

Short Circuit was also another film I enjoyed, and dare I say it I quite liked Police Academy too. :o

Die Hard- Greatest Action movie ever

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade-Ford and Connery were superb.

Big-Tom Hanks at his comic best. A wonderful comedy.

Rambo 3- I still love this movie just for being so stupid.

The Living Daylights- Dalton was brilliant

Beverely Hills Cop-Murphy at his best
