What are your 5 most influential Artists?

1. The Beatles - Cliche, but whatever. I started listening to The Beatles before I could even talk, when my parents would play them around the house. I adored them as a child and often wonder if my interest in music would be so great if they hadn't sparked it at such a young age.

2. Tori Amos - Inspired and influenced me lots as a pianist and also as someone who's gone through similar life challenges as I have.

3. Tool - Obviously. The first time I listened to Tool meant raising the bar in terms of being a musician and a music fan. They also changed the way I critique the world.

4. Mozart - I am a classically trained pianist so inevitably the music I grew up listening to and learning during piano lessons has influential qualities.

5. Cog - An Australian band who I had the pleasure of meeting once before they became 'big.' Cog influenced me to be proud to be Australian and to stay true to our roots.

Okay so I have a list of 5 artists who have completely changed my life through their music...and in my opinion are the best of the best.

5. Janis Joplin- her music style was amazing, and her voice was soul wrenching.

4. Kurt Cobain- he had to be on this list, his work with Nirvana changed the music scene forever. Had he not have died, Nirvana may not have been as big as they are now. And the guitar riff for "Smells like Teen Spirit" is one of the greatest.

3. Jim Morrison- he was incredible...thats all that neeRAB to be said.

2. Joey Ramone- The ramones...an amazing band...and Joey has such a good heart how could he not be on this list.

1. Bob Marley- one of the greatest artists of all time, he had the ability to change the world and i truly believe that. Redemption Song is the greatest song ever written in my opinion.

My five most influential artists have got to be...

Peter Gabriel
David Bridie
The Church
REM
Genesis

Those are in no particular order of preference....

Ok they are so many jimi hendrix jim morrison ian gillan of deep purple and of course his own band gillan kurt cobain nirvana

5-merle haggard-nothing much neeRAB said about this genius, his worRAB and music say it all. 4- hugh cornwell-incredibly very little is heard of him now, I was never a punk as such but he let me know that punk music can be fantastic, a great lyricist. 3-marty robbins, if you dont know much of him, just give him a try, my dad got me on to him and haggard and my dad puts him and haggard in the reverse order, but i dont, so there. 2-robbie kreiger, vastly underated and in my view in the same league as clapton, knopfler, harrison and page but i suppose the doors short carreer is a factor, the guy's immense, listen to L.A WOMAN. 1- THE ONE AND ONLY MR JAMES DOUGLAS MORRISON (POET) NUFF SAID.

1. Peter Gabriel: What can I say... the man is a living legend! From his early Genesis stuff to his fine and amazing solo work... his music has always been with me in one way or another, somehow shaping my outlook on things...

2 R.E.M: In spite of the fact NONE of my frienRAB liked them at all... I absolutely have come to love each and every song and album by these guys...even the throwaway tracks! Every era of their evolution as a band pretty much throws up some special music for me.

3) The Church: Possibly my all time favorite band... definitely the one which I respect the most... to go through so much in as many years they have been around and not produce even ONE bad album... thats brilliant work IMO... oh yeah and their most album was absolutely brimming with ideas and creativity too... rare for near thirty year old band....

4) Midnight Oil: The first band I ever came to completely idolize... all that leftt wing politics to raucous guitars and some downright thumping drums... how could one not feel energizrd?

5) Devin Townsend: So heavy yet so endearingly gentle in sound sometimes... he hs the perfect musical blend for my ears... Terria is a bloody classic modern heavy rock / metal album... and all that amazing guitar work, all through his career...

1. Ween... brilliant
2. The Smiths/ Morrissey... tongue in cheek, sensitive, cool as a cucuraber
3. The Cars... great sound, lyrics... very beatnik and very eighties
4. Laurie Anderson... original as hell
5. David Byrne... great lyricist, great showman, still making great music at 55 or whatever. My hero.

I mean, there are more... way more... but this is a start, yknow?

High five! I hope you stick around slimjim, we will be good frienRAB! Take a look at Classic Country Albums thread in the album reviews section and see what you think.

Holy crap I never noticed that but you're right! Never would have guessed... Did you find that out yourself? Also, I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Kurt Cobain dismissed that song as nothing more than a Pixies knock-off. (Although I still can't help but love the song).
