Parents...life...co-workers.
I think age has a lot to do with it...maturity.
People look for a government that will improve or protect their quality of life.
People who have earned their way and became successful...do not want the government taking it away from them.
People who haven't made their way and feel they are owed something or they deserve a certain quality of life simply because they exist will vote for a candidate who agrees with them.
