What are things to look for in a bike?

I'm looking to use it for exercises and to ride with my kids for fun. I figure I'll ride it 15 miles on average workouts. I keep hearing that if I buy a bike at Target or Walmart is will just fall apart on me and that I should buy the bike from a bike store. I also heard that I need to spend at least a few hundred if I want a good bike that's gonna last me though what kind of things am I looking for exactly in the bike? How do I know if a bike is good & what I'm looking for?

One thing you should do if you are buying a bike for exercise is to have toe clips on the pedals. That will help you get a more complete workout. If you buy a bike at Target or WalMart it will probably not last as long as a good bike but it will not fall apart in 1 year either. As long as you are not going out and riding dangerous trails a cheaper bike will be fine. Unless you are sure that you will keep riding in the future I would suggest that you don't spend very much money on it. If you do want a better bike I would suggest at least getting one with front end suspension.

Always wear a helmet! I've actually seen "road kill" and it's not a pretty sight, and it's kind of stupid that people would still be alive today had they been wearing a helmet.

Anyway, the kind of bike you get depends on the kind of riding you plan on doing plus the kind of terrain where you will be riding. Check out the wiki article on choosing a bicycle.

there are bike sales at your local bike shop. go there. they are usually very helpful. get a helmet and gloves. unless you dirt ride, stay away from the noisy knobby tires. you can get a great bike for $300.00 or so.

Honestly, a good bike will not get you anywhere farther if you shell a grand on it. Many friends I had did just that and ended up spending the price of a brand new bike in repairs.

My best friend has a 950$ bike that broke too many times (and cost a lot to repair) while I rode the same ugly old bike for two years. On top of that, expensive bikes are often stolen.

On the other hand, you could buy 3 normal bikes with the same money and they are much cheaper to repair (if you don't do it yourself). Remember: it's only wheels and a frame, nothing worth the price of a beater car!

Just avoid SuperCycle. These are made to look like mountain bikes but are extra heavy and break easily. I'd also recommend you to avoid trigger-like speed changers, not because they don't work, but because they are a pain to adjust when they're not calibrated.

Disk brakes are not necessary unless you plan to go extreme with your gear. Spend 300 bucks on something generic but solid. If it's cheap, return it, but for pete's sake, don't get yourself a 900$ mountain bike to go to work!
