What are these round & soft white sacks in the dirt in my garden? The few I didn't

remove are sprouting roots? I saw that one seems to have risen up to the surface and is barely exposed, it's white and shiny. I found another down in the dirt that looks to be hatching, and the opening is a red-orange material wrapped around a wet center of the same color. This one has thin white roots attached to it. I found wads of thin white roots in the dirt throughout the garden. I am asking because tonight (late and dark outside after about two days of rainy weather) this creature emerged from near the garden and was dragging itself along the ground slowly, pretty large about 3.5" inches long with an enormous abdomen and wings that had orange squares on them. Could that thing have just hatched from one of the round white sacks? What was it and what are these white sacks with roots in the garden? We found them originally a few weeks ago when we planted- they were everywhere, maybe 20 or so in a small dirt garden, and they were about 1.5-2 inches long, white, soft and a rounded egg shape: no roots attached originally and none throughout the dirt at that time, either. We removed & discarded almost all of them, but I've just realized there must be a few we missed. Please help! I'm terrified... Located in Baltimore City, Maryland
