doing complete rebuild
the heads are so thickly caked with so much sludge
engine is out of car and mounted on an engine stand
just casually working on it at my leisure. no hurry
any ideas to modify any areas to help prevent the sludge problem? any recommendations greatly appreciated.

The best bet is to take the engine to a machine shop and have it vat cleaned to eat away all the old sludge and oil. A cool thing to do to upgrade the engine is to have the heads ported and polished. Get a valve job done and go with the next larger size valves. Also have the heads milled and resurfaced.
Square decking the the block is also a good idea. Bore it out and go with domed pistons, H- beam rods, ARP rod bolts, A good mild RV cam, possibly a Mallory ignition, headers, high flow oil pump, up grade the chip and injectors (if it has them) and keep the cheap ass oil out of that block. Remember as tempting as it may be keep your foot out of the throttle till the engine is broken in.
