What are the reasons someone would join the military?

I'm not meaning that there is anything wrong with it, just that I recently graduated high school and someone I know joined right away. That seems a little young to me, so aside from getting money for college why would someone join?

How about, to serve your country. You will also get excellent training which will help you in civilian life after you serve your term or retire. It teaches you responsibility, self reliance, discipline, pride for your country, and respect. The GI Bill, or what ever they call it now, is also a good reason. If you are on the ball, advancement through the ranks can be fairly quick.

The pay is (or at least wasn't) not all that great, the longer you stay and the greater ranks you achieve the better the pay. The benefits are great. Free health care and, if you are single you get free room and board.

I spent 7 years in the Air Force. The GI Bill paid for my college education. I could not have done that without that help.

Even if you just stay for your initial enlistment, you will be a better person that is better prepared for life and it's challenges.

Also, I grew up in the military. My father was in the Air Force and retired after 20+ years.

1) Don't know what to do with the rest of your life.
2) Money for College.
3) Want to make a difference.
4) Don't want to end up a dead gang banger.
5) To get away from Parents
6) Some people actually love being in the Military.
7)Security of knowing you always have food, money and shelter.

Hold up! There is nothing wrong with wanting to protect your country...but you need to think about the right reasons for entering the armed forces sworn to defend our country against any foreign and domestic enemies Are you ready to die for our country? I was but my time has passed. I did my job but don't waste government money if you won't do it.
