I know that Structuralism (Essentialist + Idealist) is different from Realism (or Substantialism (Essentialist + Materialist)) in that it doesn't believe in underlying mechanisms and is context-dependent (I think). I know the normal differences between Idealist positions and Materialist ones but I'm having trouble explaining the differences between the theories themselves.

I'm not sure what makes post-structuralism different from normal structuralism either...

What i'm really trying to explain is the difference between the philosophies of Herbert Marcuse's work (One Dimensional Man) and Foucaults (Discipline and Punish). They write a lot about the same themes: control, domination and the relationship between the upper and lower classes but from different philosophical perspectives. I'm having trouble spotting the differences.

Any help would be appreciated.
