What are the financial implications to a school when a pupil is excluded?

This is a UK question, by the way.

A friend of mine with a son at secondary school was told by the deputy head that a pupil who attacked her son with woodwork tools during a lesson won't be excluded because it would cost the school a lot of money to do so. (A figure in the region of ?3000) was mentioned?) We were trying to work out where these costs could arise, and I wondered if anyone here could shed any light?
