what are the dimensions of a bicycle cassette?

i need to know the dimensions of the rear cassette on a standard mountain bike with 9 sprockets. I am designing an automatic gear changing system. the diameters of the biggest and smallest sprockets, and the distance the cassette sticks out from the side of the bike would be very useful.
 
The diameter is variable to the number of teeth on that particular gear -- there are several combinations from which to choose. Cassettes do not "stick out" from the side of the bike.

It would probably be helpful to an inventor to delve into the components before trying to design anything.

Automatic shifting 7 speeds already exist, but not with a cassette.
