If you are in traffic court, or municipal court, you would probably talk to the prosecutor at a table where other people are in and out--maybe even in the courtroom. If you are charged with a more serious offense, in Superior Court, your lawyer would be the one talking to the prosecutor.

The judge asks how you plead. If you plead "not guilty" you will be given a trial date or, in Superior Court, a pretrial date. If you plead guilty, the judge would sentence you right then if you are in traffic or municipal court. If you plead guilty in Superior Court, the judge would give you a date to come back for sentencing, so a pre-sentence report can be prepared.
