What are the best destinations in the US for style and sophisticated culture?

Heading over to the U.S. next year for a few months on my way to Canada. I want to see American culture first hand but where I come from there are no guns so we don't really have to worry about people 'poppin a cap in my ass'.. Considering i'm an upper class cocky smart ass by nature where would the best places to go?
I'm Australian a.k.a Not European
 
I would like to think that we in the U.S. are totally unsophisticated and that we completely lack style whatsoever. As for guns, everybody has one and just about everyone I know is itching to shoot at least one bratty european before they get out of high school.

Yeah, your pretty much screwed if you step foot in the U.S.
